They have quite an interesting discography, starting out as pure sinister death metal and gradually evolving to include more progressive and folk elements before eventually abandoning death metal in favor of progressive/gothic rock. After they ran out of momentum in that vein, they hired a new vocalist and did a complete 180 back to folky progressive Beginning with the latter album, Amorphis' signature sound began to change from the death metal style that characterized its earlier history towards a cleaner, more melodic and progressive sound. As the band moved away from its death metal roots, it underwent a series of line-up changes in 1995 and 1996.
